Solid Surfaces Create Homey Feeling

Employees at Kohl's headquarters have a welcoming cafeteria that can be used for business meetings, chatting with friends, and meals.

When planning the corporate cafeteria for its retail department store headquarters in Menomonee Falls, WI, Kohl's officials wanted more than just a collection of tables. Working with in-house and outsourced designers, they laid out their ideas for creating a space that would accommodate more than meals.

Designers at the corporate headquarters for Kohl's department stores wanted to create a relaxing atmosphere in the cafeteria. Use of Staron Solid Surfaces achieved that goal by making diners feel instantly at home.

The new cafeteria needed to provide a place where employees could eat without traveling off campus, but Kohl's also wanted a space for quick coffee breaks and informal meetings. "Our goal was to create a clean, comfortable environment where employees could relax, meet with friends, share a meal, and in some cases, get down to business," said Allen Kline, director of HOUR Operations for Kohl's. "We didn't want an industrial atmosphere; we wanted an inviting, urban, contemporary look that was also easy to clean and maintain."

Kohl's designers were challenged with marrying these seemingly disparate objectives and using materials approved for use in commercial, food-preparation areas-materials had to be hygienic, easy to clean, and nonporous.
